The Gut/Brain Connection

The Brain Gut Connection
2 Day Workshop
Swansea: 26th- 127th Novemberber 2010
With Phil Richards & Dr Nigel Plummer

The colon is a sewerage system, but by neglect and abuse it becomes a cesspool. When it is clean and normal, we are well and happy; let it stagnate, and it will distill the poisons of decay, fermentation and putrefaction into the blood.
It then poisons the brain and nervous system; we become mentally depressed and irritable. It will poison the heart so that we are weak and listless. Even the lungs are affected, so that the breath is foul; the digestive organs are distressed and bloated and the blood is polluted so that the skin is sallow and unhealthy.
In short, every organ of the body is poisoned. We age prematurely, look and feel old, the joints are stiff and painful, we get neuritis and dull eyes, a sluggish brain overtake us. The pleasure of living is gone.

Death Begins in the Colon

"According to the Royal Society of Medicine U.K - 90% of all chronic diseases are due to infection of the gastrointestinal tract"

Why do we get butterflies in our stomach before a performance?
Why does indigestion produce nightmares?

It turns out that both our gut and our brain originate early in embryogenesis, from the same clump of tissue which divides during fetal development. While one section turns into the central nervous system, another piece migrates to become the enteric nervous system. Later, the two nervous systems connect via a cable called the vagus nerve -- the longest of all the cranial nerves whose name is derived from Latin, meaning "wandering." The vagus nerve meanders from the brain stem through the neck and finally ends up in the abdomen.

There's the brain-gut connection!
