If you want to lose weight then you must regain your health!!!

I always tell my clients:
“If you want to lose weight, then health is a priority. You will never see a fat healthy person. It’s physiologically impossible to be fat and healthy.”
In this article I am going to concentrate on the importance of alkalisation and health. If you alkalise effectively, your energy is improved enormously and the side effect is FAT LOSS!!!
“An alkaline body can absorb up to 20 times more oxygen than an acidic body.” Not my words but those of Dr Otto Warburg, Nobel Prize Winner. He also found that diseased bodies are acidic bodies, which repel oxygen and attract the overgrowth of micro-organisms, therefore becoming highly pleomorphic (meaning many forms).
As your body becomes acidic, your body's oxygen level begins to drop, leaving you tired and fatigued. This is what allows fungus, mould, parasites, bad bacteria and viral infections to flourish and gain a hold throughout the body.
The biggest causes of acidity in the human organism are as follows:
• Negative thinking
• Relationship and financial stress
• Tap water , tea, coffee and alcohol
• Animal protein
• Dairy foods( including those garbage whey and casein drinks!)
• Processed sugar (especially carbonated drinks)
• Processed foods
• Cooked food
• Pharmaceutical drugs
• Anaerobic exercise
This pretty much covers 99 % of people’s diets. This is why we have an epidemic of disease in our society. Open your eyes and see if you can spot happy healthy people because it’s like trying to spot a dodo!!!

To increase alkalinity in the human organism, you need the following:
• Positive thinking
• Happy relationship
• Alkalised water (see my Micro Ioniser water machine)
• Adopt a 80% raw food diet
• Adopt a 80% alkaline diet e.g. vegetables, fruits & legumes
• Correct breathing
• Get the right dose of sunshine
• Aerobic exercise
At a pH slightly above 7.4 cancer cells become dormant and at pH 8.5 cancer cells will die while healthy cells will live.
Oxygen cannot stick to blood cells if the pH of the blood is too acidic. You can breathe pure oxygen, but if the blood pH is acidic, the oxygen will not be able to be picked up by the blood cells. It is chemically impossible. The blood must be normal. Normal blood has a pH of around 7.365 pH.
Remember that ATP (ENERGY) is dependent upon oxygen availability. Then doesn’t it make perfect sense to increase the body’s oxygen levels? You will automatically increase energy levels.


Arthur C. Guyton, M.D., considered the world's most recognized author on human physiology, has spent the better part of his life studying the pH or acid/alkaline balance of the body. In his "Textbook of Medical Physiology" which is used to train medical students he states
"The first step in maintaining health is to alkalize the body.”
Nobel Prize winner Dr. Alexis Carrel did an experiment [1912-1940] keeping cells from a chicken heart alive and reproducing new cells for 28 years!
A chicken's lifespan is far less than this. Why did these chicken cells live so well and so long? Dr Carrel did this by placing the cells in a saline solution, that was the perfect temperature, pH, and nutrient/mineral balance.


He replaced this solution daily (cleaning away the toxic [acidic] wastes). Eventually, after 28 years the purpose of the experiment was achieved. The cells did not die of aging they simply stopped the experiment and Dr. Carrel concluded the following;
"The cell is immortal. It is merely the fluid in which it floats which degenerates. Renew this fluid at intervals, give the cells what they require for nutrition and, as far as we know, the pulsation of life may go on forever."


So, cells do not have to age or become diseased. At least one reason they do is because of the acidic wastes which are trapped in the cells. When cells are properly nourished, bathed and cleansed daily, they're allowed to function properly and they don't become diseased.
We can't take our cells, put them into a perfectly formulated solution and change this solution daily like Dr. Carrel did, but we can drink plenty of alkaline ionized water daily and add Alkalising Salts.

Every biochemical reaction is pH sensitive, with enzymes being especially sensitive. Our diet plays an important role in maintaining appropriate pH levels in the body. This is why energy is increased when you eat an alkaline diet which consists of lots of green vegetables and alkaline fluids. ENZYMES function more efficiently with an alkaline Ph giving you more ENERGY and regeneration capabilities.


Raising pH increases the immune system's ability to kill bacteria, concludes a study conducted at The Royal Free Hospital and School of Medicine in London.
Viruses and bacteria that cause bronchitis and colds thrive in an acidic environment.
When you feel yourself coming down with a cold or flu like symptoms, this is when I strongly advise shifting your PH levels towards a higher alkalinity state using the alkalizing salts and a meat, dairy and sugar free diet whilst following a vegan raw food diet.


When we become acidic, we also start losing calcium and magnesium out of the blood and the bones. Minerals are harnessed in a mandatory need to keep the blood pH slightly alkaline. This becomes a losing game, for most people are also deficient in magnesium and other basic buffering minerals.

The Insanity of Putting Mercury in People's Mouths

Eight million mercury fillings are put in people’s mouths in Britain every year. This includes children. This is insanity in its highest order and the British Dental Association is an absolute disgrace. They continually deny that mercury fillings cause any health concerns.
Mercury, considered to be both the most toxic non-radioactive element and the most volatile heavy metal SHOULD NEVER be placed in people’s mouths.
How is it that the only place mercury is safe is in the mouth?

Dr. Boyd Halley, Professor and Chair of the Department of Chemistry, Professor in the College of Pharmacy and in the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Kentucky and an NIH Postdoctoral Scholar in the Department of Physiology, at Yale University Medical School has conducted some of the most important research on the biochemical effects of inorganic mercury, specifically from dental amalgams. His results have never been refuted. Dr. Halley has proven, beyond any challenge, that mercury vapour is released from dental amalgam fillings in large concentrations Even in fillings more than 20 years old.
Each amalgam filling has as much mercury as a thermometer, and its poisonous vapors are constantly emitted from the teeth to the brain. This is a particular risk, according to the U.S. government, to the developing brain of the child. The foetus is at the greatest risk of all if the pregnant woman has dental fillings drilled out or implanted, because of the proven transport of mercury through the placenta. So too is the nursing infant of a woman with amalgam dental fillings, because of the transport of mercury into the breast milk.

If a single large amalgam filling contained 1 gram of mercury (1 million micrograms) and lost a significantly toxic 10 micrograms per day, there would be enough mercury for 100,000 days or about 274 years of exposure. A small, tenth of a gram, mercury filling would last 27 years. So enough mercury is within amalgam fillings to provide consistent chronic toxic exposure for the life of most fillings.


Mercury and the Heart

Mercury Found a Factor in Congestive Heart Failure
Researchers at the Catholic University in Rome have tested patients with advanced congested heart failure and found a 'marked elevation' of mercury in the heart tissue - in the order of a massive 22,000 times higher than normal. Because heart tissues absorb a large percentage of mercury entering the body, cardiologists need to pay attention to the nightmare of mercury toxicity that is threatening our hearts with cardiac arrest.
Soviet doctors who studied workers exposed to mercury, found that the heavy metal had a profound effect on the heart, interfering with its normal contractions, electrical conductivity and overall regulation. They also found that mercury accumulated in the heart tissue and valves. Inhaled mercury vapour from amalgam fillings travels rapidly to heart tissue.
Finnish men with the highest concentrations of mercury in their hair also had the highest death rates from cardiovascular disease, congestive heart failure and stroke, (2002 study presented at the American Heart Association's Asia Pacific Scientific Conference.)
Researchers also found that mercury accumulated in the heart tissue and valves even when very little is found elsewhere in the body. Why this happens is not known, but researchers are clear that mercury adversely affects heart metabolism and worsens cellular function. Mercury adversely affects the myocardium in a sub clinical manner but eventually becomes the background basis for pathological shifts that undermine heart health. The most noticeable shifts are in beat frequency and voltage.



Mercury and the Thyroid Gland

There are four iodine binding sites or receptors on the thyroid gland. These receptors bind with the iodine we get from our diet. The iodine enters the thyroid and activates it. If the thyroid is not absorbing enough iodine it will not be fully activated and the body's temperature will be abnormally low.
Enter dental mercury. I discovered that mercury from dental fillings can migrate to the thyroid gland and can sit on one or more of the thyroid's four iodine receptors, blocking iodine from reaching the receptors, thereby preventing full activation of the thyroid. Blocked by dental mercury, iodine cannot be absorbed in normal amounts by the thyroid gland. The result is low body temperature or hypothyroidism.
“ underactive thyroid gland can contribute to heart disease and the propensity to sustain a heart attack.” states Broda O Barnes, M.D. a Connecticut physician who specialized in identifying and treating the many unsuspected connections between low thyroid activity and health problems. “I am convinced that we are seeing today many more people with low thyroid function than ever before” explained Dr. Barnes “and that the rising incidence of heart attacks is related to the rising incidence of hypothyroidism.”
Mercury is a toxic metal with significant effects on the thyroid. There is ample evidence that mercury leaches from dental amalgam fillings and contributes to thyroid disease and anaemia. While large doses of mercury can induce hyperthyroidism, smaller amounts can induce hypothyroidism by interfering with both the production of thyroxin (T4) and the conversion of T4 to T3.
Mercury inhibits the conversion of thyroid hormones T4 (thyroxine) to T3 (triiodothyronine)—a process called monodeiodination. Decreased T3 levels are often associated with fatigue, depression, erratic heat regulation, high cholesterol, and numerous other thyroid-related ailments.
Regarding the thyroid, selenium is a component of the enzyme that helps convert T4 to T3 peripherally, so deficiencies of selenium may impair thyroid function and promote hypothyroidism. Taking selenium with Lugols Iodine is a great way to kick start the thyroid and help the body detoxify mercury.

Mercury and oxygen starvation

In short, mercury interferes with a whole host of vital body functions and destroys body chemistry. For instance, chronic fatigue can be related to oxygen insufficiency. Mercury prevents oxygen from binding with the haemoglobin in red blood cells.
Hemoglobin has passenger seats for oxygen that are called binding sites. Each binding site is capable of binding to one oxgygen molecule and transporting it to tissues that are low in oxygen. Oxygen jumps off the passenger seat and leaps to help deprived tissue with little effort.
SHOULD MERCURY COME ALONG, UNLIKE OXYGEN, IT JUMPS INTO THE PASSENGER SEAT, BUCKLES UP, AND PLANS TO STAY THERE UNTIL THE RED BLOOD CELL IS RECYCLED. WHEN ENOUGH MERCURY COMBINES WITH THESE PASSENGER SEATS ON THE HEMOGLOBIN, THE BODY EXPERIENCES CHRONIC FATIGUE DUE TO LACK OF OXYGEN TRANSPORT.
I have simply scratched the surface on the dangers of having mercury fillings in your mouth. I myself had suffered chronic mercury poisoning for over 25 years and made the huge mistake of having 9 removed in one sitting. If you have amalgam fillings in your mouth, I urge you to get them removed after placing yourself on Heavy Metal Detox for 1 month before and at least 3 months after. Consult with a mercury free dentist who understands the dangers of silver (mercury) fillings about getting them removed.

Using Amino Acids to Break PB's in Weight Training

I just had a top trainer from a premiership rugby club ask me why amino work capacity is so awesome. The results that I have had personally and the feedback; from elite athletes through to members of the public who just enjoy training, has been truly amazing.
An elite weight lifter who competes in the GB team added 7 kg to his clean & jerk and 10 kg to his back squat. Now this is truly remarkable.

Why Amino load before training, using Amino Work Capacity?

Why add D- Ribose to Amino Work Capacity?
Studies have shown that any amount of D-ribose you give to energy-starved cells gives them an energy boost. At the University of Missouri, researcher Ronald Terjung has shown that even very small doses (the equivalent of about 500 mg) of D-ribose increase energy salvage in muscles by more than 100%. The most significant findings of the studies underscored the dramatic effect that D-ribose administration played in both energy restoration and the return of normal diastolic cardiac function. A clinical study from Zimmer’s group in Munich in 1992 showed that D-ribose administration to patients with severe, stable coronary artery disease increased exercise tolerance and delayed the onset of moderate angina.

Most amazing is that when muscles are supplemented with D-ribose, they continue to add to their energy stores even while they actively work! Until this study was reported, it was thought that muscle energy stores were only refilled in muscles at rest.

Gain Health Lose Weight Part 1

When clients come to me with the goal of weight loss, then my goal with them is to gain health. You will never see a healthy fat person. Period. My first question to them is
“how much stress is going on in your life?”
If, on the scale of one being the lowest and 10 the highest, the client gives me an 8, my plan for health and weight loss evolve very quickly around walking, jogging, swimming, outdoor boot camps, yoga, meditation and vegetarian 80% raw food diet.
Imagine this client to be a very highly strung businesswoman, lots of stress at work, 2 young children, plenty of sleepless nights, husband doesn’t pull his weight around the house, financial difficulties and to add to this 5 coffees a day just to get her through the day.
This is a very typical scenario, as we all know. I meet people like this every day. Can you imagine adding more stress to this lady by giving her 3 weights sessions per week?! This lady spends 90% of her time indoors and then training in a health club (which should be renamed, in my opinion, to death club,) is going to further stress her.
You must remember that exercise is stress. Only prescribe it when the client can take it and adapt to the stress you prescribe. When you become an expert at prescribing stress, which is what exercise is, your results will improve enormously.
This is a bit different to how I would have approached it 10 years ago. It would have been a case of’ just get on with it.’ I would have put this lady on a high protein diet with lots of weight training to build up the muscle, because as we all know ,you can’t burn fat unless you build muscle. Well, what you must realize is this you can’t build muscle when you are stressed, period. Training at a high intensity, which is what is required when you want to put on lean muscle tissue, is impossible when you are stressed mentally.
The problem of the high protein diet and weight training approach to weight loss is that it increases the stress of the human organism enormously. A high animal protein diet: reduces oxygen within the body. Causes a highly acidic state which causes your blood to become very sticky. Changes the internal terrain to become favorable for disease- promoting microorganisms. Increases putrefication in the bowels, which causes autointoxication… I could go on and on. REMEMBER THIS: cancer thrives in LOW OXYGEN and HIGH ACIDITY. That’s exactly what high protein diets and anaerobic training manifest. I will cover this again in future articles.
When you are mentally stressed and you keep trying to push your body physically, the straw that can break the camel’s back will eventually happen. As I keep telling my athletes/clients
” don’t train unless you can gain.”
This means that unless you can give 100% to your training session, you are wasting your time. in my humble opinion, after training the human organism for over 25 years.
When I approach a training session personally, and I pull up outside the gym or the start of a run - unless I can give it 100% and enjoy it as well, I cancel the session.
Remember this: you either get better or worse, you never stay the same. If this session is not going to make me better, then I need more rest and would rather go for a massage, swim or walk over the mountain, get fresh air and sunlight. I do anything to de-stress. When I arrive for my next session, I can then truly give it 100% and stimulate a result.
If you are going to be able to give 100% to the training session and get the results you deserve for your efforts, you must make sure you work at reducing stress in your life and improve your health. Drink Green Life and Alkalising Salts. Eat organic foods, eliminate animal protein from your diet and get adequate sunlight and sleep .
My second question to my client is “
how much mercury do you have you in your mouth?” and “are there any root canals in there?”
This may seem a strange question to the misinformed person, but let me tell you where I put this on my priority list: I would not even consider training an athlete/client if they had mercury fillings or root canals if they weren’t going to get them removed. Why? I will explain this in great detail in part 2 of this series of “Gain Health Lose Weight. “

Remember that ATP (ENERGY) is dependent upon oxygen availability. Then doesn’t it make perfect sense to increase the body’s oxygen levels? You will automatically increase energy levels.
Arthur C. Guyton, M.D., considered the world's most recognized author on human physiology, has spent the better part of his life studying the pH or acid/alkaline balance of the body. In his "Textbook of Medical Physiology" which is used to train medical students he states
"The first step in maintaining health is to alkalize the body.”
Nobel Prize winner Dr. Alexis Carrel did an experiment [1912-1940] keeping cells from a chicken heart alive and reproducing new cells for 28 years!
A chicken's lifespan is far less than this. Why did these chicken cells live so well and so long? Dr Carrel did this by placing the cells in a saline solution, that was the perfect temperature, pH, and nutrient/mineral balance.
He replaced this solution daily (cleaning away the toxic [acidic] wastes). Eventually, after 28 years the purpose of the experiment was achieved. The cells did not die of aging they simply stopped the experiment and Dr. Carrel concluded the following;
"The cell is immortal. It is merely the fluid in which it floats which degenerates. Renew this fluid at intervals, give the cells what they require for nutrition and, as far as we know, the pulsation of life may go on forever."
So, cells do not have to age or become diseased. At least one reason they do is because of the acidic wastes which are trapped in the cells. When cells are properly nourished, bathed and cleansed daily, they're allowed to function properly and they don't become diseased.

Why add D- Ribose to Amino Work Capacity?
Studies have shown that any amount of D-ribose you give to energy-starved cells gives them an energy boost. At the University of Missouri, researcher Ronald Terjung has shown that even very small doses (the equivalent of about 500 mg) of D-ribose increase energy salvage in muscles by more than 100%. A clinical study from Zimmer’s group in Munich in 1992 showed that D-ribose administration to patients with severe, stable coronary artery disease increased exercise tolerance and delayed the onset of moderate angina.

Most amazing is that when muscles are supplemented with D-ribose, they continue to add to their energy stores even while they actively work! Until this study was reported, it was thought that muscle energy stores were only refilled in muscles at rest.

Pineapple and Beansprout Salad

300g of beansprouts (or other sprouted)
1tsp turmeric
½ tsp ground cumin
25ml Udo’s Choice Oil
150g onions
100g cashew nuts
500g pineapple
25ml cider vinegar
Himalayan crystal salt and freshly ground black pepper

Rinse the beansprouts in a colander and drain well.
Toast spices in a pan. Add oil and fry onions until soft. Add cashews and stir over a low heat for 2-3 minutes.
Add pineapple and cider vinegar. Stir and season. Remove from heat and put in a large bowl.
Mix in beansprouts and chill before serving.

Spicy Lentil, Coconut and Coriander Soup




1 ½ tsp cumin seeds
1 ½ tsp coriander seeds
2tbsp Coconoil
1 red onion, diced
1 clove garlic, crushed
1 leek, diced
2 carrots, diced
175g red lentils
900ml vegetable stock (ensure it is yeast extract/MSG free if using ready made.)
200ml coconut milk
Himalayan crystal salt and freshly ground black pepper
Handful of coriander leaves, freshly chopped

Toast the coriander and cumin seeds in a dry pan (not non-stick or with other coating) until they start to smell spicy, moving them around the pan consistently, to prevent burning.
Grind the spices to a fine powder, using a pestle and mortar or coffee grinder.
Heat the oil in a pan and add onion, garlic, leek and carrots. Cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables soften slightly, then stir in the cooked spices.
Stir in the lentils, coating them with the spicy oil, then add stock and coconut milk. Season, bring to the boil, then reduce to a simmer and cook for 10-15 minutes or until the lentils are tender.


Beetroot and Avocado Salad


4 medium raw beetroots
1 small red onion, thinly sliced
3tbsp cider vinegar
4 tbsp Udo’s oil, plus a little for finishing
1/2 tsp agave nectar
1-3 tsp chilli sauce or paste (eg Tabasco)
1tsp Himalayan crystal salt
Freshly ground black pepper
2 medium avocadoes, peeled and thinly sliced
10g coriander leaves
10g mint leaves
20g pea shoots (or lamb’s lettuce)
150g broad beans, blanched, refreshed and skinned (or soya beans)

Peel the beetroots and slice them very thinly (2-3mm.) Boil for 3-5 minutes, until semi-cooked. Drain and put in a large bowl.
Add red onion, vinegar, oil, agave nectar, chilli sauce, salt and pepper to t he beetroot bowl and toss everything together.
Leave to one side for 10-15 minutes, then taste.
To serve: spread half the beetroot mixture on a large platter or in a shallow bowl. Top with the avocado, mint, pea shoots and broad beans. Add the rest of the beetroot and arrange the remaining ingredients on top.
Drizzle with a little oil and serve.

Gain Health, Lose Weight Part 1

“Don’t Train Unless You Can Gain”


When clients come to me with the goal of weight loss, then my goal with them is to gain health. You will never see a healthy fat person. Period. My first question to them is:


“how much stress is going on in your life?”


If, on the scale of one being the lowest and 10 the highest, the client gives me an 8, my plan for health and weight loss evolve very quickly around walking, jogging, swimming, outdoor boot camps, yoga, meditation and vegetarian 80% raw food diet.
Imagine this client to be a very highly strung businesswoman, lots of stress at work, 2 young children, plenty of sleepless nights, husband doesn’t pull his weight around the house, financial difficulties and to add to this 5 coffees a day just to get her through the day.


This is a very typical scenario, as we all know. I meet people like this every day. Can you imagine adding more stress to this lady by giving her 3 weights sessions per week?! This lady spends 90% of her time indoors and then training in a health club (which should be renamed, in my opinion, to death club,) is going to further stress her.


You must remember that exercise is stress. Only prescribe it when the client can take it and adapt to the stress you prescribe. When you become an expert at prescribing stress, which is what exercise is, your results will improve enormously.


This is a bit different to how I would have approached it 10 years ago. It would have been a case of’ just get on with it.’ I would have put this lady on a high protein diet with lots of weight training to build up the muscle, because as we all know ,you can’t burn fat unless you build muscle. Well, what you must realize is this you can’t build muscle when you are stressed, period. Training at a high intensity, which is what is required when you want to put on lean muscle tissue, is impossible when you are stressed mentally.


The problem of the high protein diet and weight training approach to weight loss is that it increases the stress of the human organism enormously. A high animal protein diet: reduces oxygen within the body. Causes a highly acidic state which causes your blood to become very sticky. Changes the internal terrain to become favorable for disease- promoting microorganisms. Increases putrefication in the bowels, which causes autointoxication… I could go on and on. REMEMBER THIS: cancer thrives in LOW OXYGEN and HIGH ACIDITY. That’s exactly what high protein diets and anaerobic training manifest. I will cover this again in future articles.


When you are mentally stressed and you keep trying to push your body physically, the straw that can break the camel’s back will eventually happen. As I keep telling my athletes/clients


” Don’t Train Unless You Can Gain.”


This means that unless you can give 100% to your training session, you are wasting your time. in my humble opinion, after training the human organism for over 25 years.
When I approach a training session personally, and I pull up outside the gym or the start of a run - unless I can give it 100% and enjoy it as well, I cancel the session.
Remember this: you either get better or worse, you never stay the same. If this session is not going to make me better, then I need more rest and would rather go for a massage, swim or walk over the mountain, get fresh air and sunlight. I do anything to de-stress. When I arrive for my next session, I can then truly give it 100% and stimulate a result.


If you are going to be able to give 100% to the training session and get the results you deserve for your efforts, you must make sure you work at reducing stress in your life and improve your health. My second question to my client is


“how much mercury do you have you in your mouth?” and

“are there any root canals in there?”

Rutin is actually a form of Quercetin. Quercetin, one of the most common and abundant flavonoids, occurs bound to sugars in the form known as Rutin or Rutoside. Curcumin helps prevent the DNA mutations that can lead to cancer. In one study, smokers that took just 1 teaspoon of turmeric each day for 30 days had lower levels of cancer-causing mutagens in their urine. Researchers at the University of Chicago found that curcumin also inhibits the growth of H. pylori, a bacteria believed to cause stomach and colon cancer.

Curcumin keeps the heart healthy by preventing a plaque build-up in the arteries, which can lead to atherosclerosis. In one study, participants taking just 500 milligrams of curcumin each day significantly reduced their cholesterol levels in as little as 10 days. Preliminary research indicates that curcumin may also help lower blood pressure and prevent blood clots.

A natural detoxifier, curcumin helps protect the liver from the damaging effects of alcohol, toxic chemicals, and even some pharmaceutical drugs. Strength Training for Rugby Part 2



When you want to gain strength, size and power for rugby, you have to train with a ferocious intensity and purpose. When you get to the gym, make sure you have played out in your mind a few times, the workout you are about to do. Then you will fully understand what is required to stimulate growth.
To engage the mechanism which allows your body to create muscle and build strength, you have to place a huge stress on the system. You are only going to be in the gym for a very short period of time, so you must enter the zone and wear a t-shirt saying "fuck off I'm training".

Two of the BIGGEST mistakes made by all trainees are not training HARD and WITH PURPOSE and the pre, during and post workout drinks. If you get these right, then workout with intensity, your results will be PHENOMENAL!
This is my recommendation for pre, during and post workout nutrition. It does change for individuals, but this will give you a good idea of what you need to be doing:


Pre Workout - 45 minutes/1 hour before workout or game.
1 - 2 scoops Amino Work Capacity and 40 grams Electade. Mix into 3/4 litre of water.

During Game or workout
60 grams Electade, 1 scoop of Amino Work Capacity

Post Workout/Game
30 grams Green Protein Power. 60 - 100 grams Vitargo (depending on body weight.) 5 grams creatine. 10 grams glutamine.

That’s it. Doesn’t look much on paper, but trust me. Get your nutrition, hydration, pre, during and post workout nutrition right and train like an animal, then your progress will be phenomenal.

Stength Training For Rugby Part One



I have just watched some rugby players work out in my local gym and feel forced to write this series of articles on strength training for rugby.
What should be obvious to anyone with the brain capacity higher than that of demented house fly is that in order to get strong you actually have to lift heavy weights and exert a level of effort in the process.
When I observe rugby players doing smith machine bench press super setted while talking with his mate, I start to twitch like an epileptic with turrets.
Let me make it perfectly clear. When you are trying to gain strength for rugby or, for that matter, any sport. You have to train with enormous intensity and purpose, otherwise you are completely wasting your time.
If at any time you arrive for a workout and you know that you can’t give it 100%, then you are better off leaving it. Always remember this quote
“If you can’t GAIN don’t TRAIN.”
There are three things of huge importance in determining a very productive workout : what you have eaten that day, your level of hydration and how much stress you have in your life. I will go into these subjects more in later articles.
I see many mistakes in countless programs, but I will focus on one of these in each article. For this article it will be
DON’T DO TOO MANY EXERCISES IF YOU WANT TO DEVELOP ATHLETIC TYPE STRENGTH. If you want a bodybuilder’s physique, do as many as you like but you will get SMASHED on the rugby field. I guarantee you that.
To best explain the way I train rugby players and develop their physicality very quickly, I will give you two example all over weights programs. You can then see the SIMPLICITY of my program Trust me though. It took me 20 years to come to this conclusion.

Allover Program 1
A = 10 X 1 – 5 Snatch Pulls Off The Floor
B1 = 4 X 20 Reverse Hypers
B2 = 4 X 20 Hanging Leg Raises

Allover Program 2
A = 10 X 1 – 5 Front Squats (arse to the grass)

I learned more about Health and Performance in two days with Phil Richards than I did in the entire two years prior to meeting him. (And in those two years I went on a lot of seminars, read a ton of books and watched lots of DVD’s; not to mention reading hundreds of articles on the web.) Phil is easily the most knowledgeable and interesting person I have met in the Health and Performance industry. What follows will explain why I feel this way.

Going back 18 months

At the start of 2009 I had the privilege to start training with a team of Powerlifters in Leeds. For those of you who don’t know, Powerlifting is a sport whose competitors compete in the Squat, Bench and Deadlift. Almost everyone is familiar with those three lifts, yet very few people know of the sport. This is sad as it’s a wonderful sport. Simple brutality: he who lifts the most, wins. It attracts hard asses and ex cons and rewards those who train fiercely in the gym with warrior determination.

The Leeds Powerlifting team was made up of about 12 guys, all of whom were brutally strong and two of whom would be in anybody’s all time top 10 lifters from the United Kingdom. Furthermore, one of them could lay legitimate claim to being, perhaps, the strongest man ever to walk the face of the planet. However, all this proved to be a double edged sword for me.

On the one hand, within 10 months of training and competing alongside these lifters, I was placed 6th at the WPC world powerlifting championships in the 90kg Open class. (This is the 2nd most prestigious championships in powerlifting, behind the IPF’s). On the other hand, I’d ballooned from a lean 13st 7lbs to a fat 14st 10lbs and I felt like crap. Complete and utter crap.

Now when I say crap, I really do mean it. By January 2010 I was struggling; emotionally and physically. I was angry all the time and the gains in the gym that came so easily in 2009 had dried up. Furthermore, I was extremely stressed trying to fit in four x three hour gym sessions a week AND run a property business. This was a dead end street and a road to disaster.

In walks Phil

Around February 2010 I read an interview with Phil Richards on Elitefts.com. I immediately rang him up and arranged to see him for two days in April. What I liked about the interview with Phil was that he talked about Health AND Performance. The way most Powerlifters (and many others involved in sports) go on, you’d think the two were mutually exclusive! This could not be further from the truth, as Phil would show me.

When I went to see Phil, I was experiencing the following problems:

- Stomach pain: more than likely an ulcer. My stomach caused me aggravation after eating and if I went more than 2 hours without eating. As you can imagine; this was a major problem.
- Tooth ache.
- Ear ache.
- Kidney pain.
- Pain in the left side of my chest.
- Lack of mental clarity.
- Overwhelming desire to sleep.
- Bad skin: spots.

There were definitely more symptoms, but I do not remember. The stomach issue was the most severe and nagging problem and it was present day in and day out. Clearly, I was at the cliff edge. The question is, which way would I go?

April 16th to 17th 2010

Phil did a blood microscopy for me and explained what he saw. My blood had little movement; I had a lot of misshapen red blood cells and evidence of roleau. This was very interesting and provided massive leverage for me to make a massive change right at that moment. I couldn’t wait any longer!

I wanted to feel healthy and make gains again in the gym. I left Wales with a nutrition and supplement plan. Within 3 days every single symptom has disappeared! No GP, no drugs, no surgery, just food and supplements.

I quickly leaned down to 13st 10lbs and felt like a different person in a very good way.

Fast-forward to July 2010

I am now making rapid gains in the gym and really starting to feel amazing. As well as eradicating the problems above, I have also benefitted from the following since implementing all Phil’s recommendations:

- Only needing 6 hours sleep night
- Increased Testosterone levels and libido
- Even energy levels throughout the day
- Great control of my emotions; I’m much calmer
- Greater focus in the gym
- Increased sense of well-being (I know this is vague, but if you did what I did you’d be saying the same thing)
